Igor Shipilin is the Chairman of the Crimean Watercolour Society. He graduated from the Sevastopol Art School and attended classes as a non-degree student at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
The artist is often referred to as the “Sevastopol romantic” for his lyrical landscapes of Crimea. With a strong command of composition and a deep absorption of local color, Shipilin conveys on canvas his enduring fascination with the poetic charm of the region’s past.
He works in a distinctive manner, using the brush as if constructing a mosaic on the surface of the canvas. His images are vibrant and multi-layered. The viewer is drawn in, almost eagerly, trying to absorb every оттенок, and in doing so retains the warmth woven into the work.
Shipilin has a subtle, almost breathing connection with Sevastopol. How else can one explain his remarkable ability to capture the spirit of this playfully restless city? His painting is infused with salty air, tenderness toward the landscape, and a genuine affection for its people.
